• Materials Engineer

  • Overview

    Element has an opportunity for a Materials Engineer whose primary responsibility is to conduct a wide range of metallographic evaluations of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Provide technical assistance to customers and co-workers, with focus on quality, standardization, and continuous improvement. This position will work closely with the department supervisors in facilitating the preparation of test specimens and testing in order to meet customer turn time and requests.  


    • Provide guidance and support to lab technicians
    • Meet and interact with customers to define evaluation processes and techniques
    • Write procedures that describe test and evaluation methods
    • Review existing procedures for accuracy and update when needed
    • Perform sample preparation steps of section, mount, grind, and polish metallurgical test specimens following laboratory procedures published by customer and relevant industry specifications
    • Perform Rockwell Hardness and Micro-hardness tests following customer procedure
    • Perform metallurgical evaluations for related departments and issue reports
    • Perform weekly and monthly sieve analysis of media for production department
    • Perform titrations and report nickel tank analysis as required
    • Ensure equipment used is calibrated and verify the calibration before use
    • Monitor consumable supplies and keep inventory of supplies at recommended levels
    • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives including 5S of the area

    NOTE:  This position requires access to export-controlled commodities, technical data, technology, software, and services.  U.S. citizenship, U.S. legal permanent resident status, protected person status under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3), or U.S. Government export authorization is required.     Skills / Qualifications

    • Bachelor degree in Metallurgy or related discipline
    • Minumum 7 years experience working in a laboratory in the field of metallurgy testing
    • Excellent technical report writing skills
    • Good maths skills
    • Knowledge and experience of safe operation of metallurgical testing equipment and operating in lab and / or industrial environment
    • Excellent organisational and team leading skills
    • Exceptional communication skills
