  • Overview

    Element has an opportunity for a Mechanical Test Engineer  to join our lab in Hitchin.

    The work will involve mechanical tests on polymeric materials and structures (primarily composites but including thermoplastics, elastomers and structural adhesives).

    Full technical and safety training will be provided, as well as necessary PPE.

    Responsibilities

    • Taking responsibility for test programmes for characterising the material/component mechanical performance including performing the tests.  This will necessitate organising and conducting test programmes, data analysis/interpretation, technical reporting, and interaction with clients
    • Perform mechanical tests on polymeric materials (composites, thermoplastics, elastomers and structural adhesives)
    • Design test fixtures for mechanical tests on coupons and structures
    • Set up and run universal test machines as well as servo-hydraulic test machines
    • Process test data as required by the project manager
    • Manage test projects and liaise with clients regarding samples required, project status etc.
    • Write and contribute to technical proposals for prospective clients (single client and public sector proposals)
    • Participating in technical meetings and presenting to Element clients.
    • Working on a number of projects simultaneously.  The work will involve managing small and medium sized projects, planning and coordinating project work, designing test fixtures, conducting mechanical tests including fatigue tests, data reduction and interpretation of results, and technical reporting

    Skills / Qualifications

    • A good knowledge of polymeric materials and mechanical testing
    • Good knowledge of Microsoft software i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint
    • Excellent Health and Safety standards and practices
    • Project management with budgetary controls and work planning
