Overview

Element has an opportunity for a Metallurgical Laboratory Technician (MLT), whose primary responsibilities include performing metallurgical sample preparations and related technical tasks in accordance with standard operating procedures. These tasks are essential for accurately evaluating the physical and chemical properties of materials. The technician prepares materials for laboratory examinations, sets up and maintains specialized equipment, records data and observations, and supports engineers in producing client reports. Equipment used includes hardness testers, abrasive saws, cutoff wheels, and mounting and polishing tools. The role also involves maintaining equipment and computerized records of experimental data.

 

Responsibilities

  • Read and apply specifications, procedures, drawings, and sketches to accurately prepare and test specimens.
  • Conduct corrosion tests, heat treatments, and hardness tests (Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers, microhardness) following established procedures.
  • Safely perform sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing, and chemical etching for metallurgical evaluations.
  • Use and maintain laboratory equipment and tools, demonstrating proficiency with a range of devices for analysis and collection.
  • Maintain traceability, client confidentiality, and adhere to 5S protocols, safety standards, quality requirements and accreditations.
  • Utilize computer systems and specialized software to record, analyze, and report test data.
  • Work closely with managers and team members, provide regular updates, and support junior colleagues when needed.
  • Handle moderately complex issues independently and escalate more complicated problems appropriately.

Skills / Qualifications

  • Effective time management, task prioritization, and independent work capability
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Intermediate proficiency in reading, writing, math, and computer applications
  • Clear communication skills with the ability to follow and give instructions
  • Team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety practices and cost control awareness
  • Knowledge of 5S and SQDC principles and their impact on lab efficiency
  • B.S. in materials science or metallurgy preferred or 1-4 years demonstrated technical/vocational experience in metallurgy, chemistry, or related fields
  • Lifting requirements: up to 50 pounds with ability to stand on feet for prolonged periods of time (full shift ~ 8 hrs)
