Overview

Element has an opportunity for an ASBESTOS LABORATORY MANAGER based at our busy laboratories in Deeside.

 

Element Deeside is the largest analytical chemistry laboratory within the Element Group and the market leading UK laboratory undertaking the testing of soils, waters, wastes, oils, NAPLs, ambient air, soil vapours and gases from all over the world. The laboratory undertakes high volume routine analysis as well as offering bespoke method development, technical support and hydrocarbon forensic interpretations to enhance the support we can deliver. The laboratory has an international reputation for excellence and supports clients that require a higher level of technical expertise, reliability in data quality and seamless project management from sample collection to timely delivery of data in the format of choice.

 

We are seeking a highly organized, experienced, and detail-oriented Asbestos Laboratory Manager to oversee daily operations of our asbestos testing laboratory. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring all laboratory activities comply with relevant health and safety standards, regulatory guidelines and internal quality systems. This position requires strong technical knowledge of asbestos sampling and analysis methods, personnel management skills, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Management of daily laboratory operations and staff to ensure timely and accurate analysis of asbestos samples
  • Coaching and training of laboratory analysts and technicians; monitor performance and provide guidance
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Maintain and improve the laboratory’s quality management system, including internal audits, quality control/assurance procedures, and document control
  • Ensure all laboratory instrumentation is maintained, calibrated, and operating correctly
  • Liaise with clients and regulatory bodies; provide technical advice and support as needed
  • Keep up to date with developments in asbestos regulations, laboratory best practices, and analytical methods
  • Assist with budgeting, procurement, and resource planning for laboratory operations
  • Prepare and present performance reports, audits, and corrective action plans as required
  • Promoting compliance with company health and safety requirements, adopting a proactive safety attitude to ensure the safety of all colleagues

 

Skills / Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will possess P401 and P403 qualifications
  • P408 qualification would be advantageous but not essential
  • In-depth knowledge of analytical methods including PLM, PCM, (as applicable).
  • Experience and knowledge of ISO 17025, HSG 248, and Lab 30 practices and procedures
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, a leader with experience of supervising a team is preferred but not essential
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025 accreditation requirements and UKAS (or equivalent) standards
  • Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work under pressure
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation and COSHH regulations
  • Familiarity with Blue book methods for asbestos gravimetric testing is advantageous but not essential
